Students test into DEV-08601 Basic Reading Skills or DEV-09601 College Reading Skills.

DEV 08601 Basic Reading Skills has been designed for college students who are able to read but do not read well enough to succeed at college-level work. Its design is based on the assumption the students enrolled in the class are able to decode words: they are not illiterate but quite often are alliterate. They can read but frequently choose not to. As a result, their reading skills are poor from lack of practice.

The main goals are to get students reading, to help them find an interest in reading, and to guide them in the use of the strategies that good readers use when they read. Students will read a minimum of five books during the semester.

When they finish this course, student should be ready for the College Reading Skills course.

DEV 09601 College Reading Skills has been designed to help students answer the question, Who am I as a learner, and how can I improve? Students will find out how, when, and where they do their best learning. They will determine how they think and learn and develop strategies to maximize their strengths and overcome their weaknesses.

Another emphasis in this course is to improve reading skills while developing reading speed and comprehension. Students will also spend some time examining their attitudes and making personal and career goals. They will set some long and short-term goals for themselves and begin on the road to reaching those goals.
